How to Do Greece on a Budget

See the Sights Without Going Bust

Dreaming of lazy afternoons in the Aegean Sea and mornings wandering through ancient ruins and picturesque cobbled streets?
You are not alone: Greece is a very popular tourist destination, which receives about 30 million visitors in 2018. But although demand is high, a Hellenic holiday does not have to break the bank. Here are three proven tips to stretch those euros as far as they go.

Spend Up Front to Save Later

Oceanfront Cafe

We were taking sips of Aperol and watching the sunset in an oceanfront café on Naxos Island when the call came:
The ferries, closed during the last days due to high winds and turbulent seas, worked again. At this point, we had to rework our itinerary, fly to Naxos instead of taking the boat from Athens and skip our day in Mykonos, and if we wanted to be on the ferry to Santorini the next morning, we would need to book it at the ticket office more close in the double, an opportunity we would have missed without that alert.
In most cases, I prefer to make my trip with DIY, but for this trip, we work with an agent for such an occasion:
Given the probability of ferry strikes and weather-related cancellations, not to mention a serious lack of communication of the Various companies on such cancellations, hiring someone to ensure their interests is a solid investment. However, before throwing that credit card, contact some places to get quotes (we use Dolphin Hellas; dolphin-hellas.gr), and pay close attention to how quickly they respond and how comprehensively they address your questions and concerns. You want someone to move quickly and efficiently on your behalf, and a high level of attention and a quick response time in the planning stages predicts the consideration you will receive on the ground.

Travel at the Right Time

Travel at the Right Time in Greece

Are you looking for a great summer getaway?
This is not the place to spend quiet days on the beach or stroll through towns and cities with perfect postcard. Greece is at its maximum capacity from June to August, which means an overflowing crowd, high hotel and restaurant rates and attractions packed to the brim. To reduce your bill, and avoid mobs, visit during shoulder season, when the streets may be crowded, but it is much easier to reach the elbow. In spring and autumn, the weather is equally idyllic, and although it will still appear before the hordes to see the Parthenon and navigate the narrow paths of Oia, in Santorini, it is much worse in July.

Pick Your Priorities

Pick Your Priorities in greece

The bad news:
You may not be able to find a travel agent who is willing to book your ferry tickets alone. The good: in addition to dealing with the essential details, such as transfers and hotels, as well as last minute schedule changes, such as putting it on a flight when ferries are canceled and extending stays at the hotel when necessary, an Effective agent will help you allocate your dollars to align with your personal priorities.
Can't you sleep well without soft pillows and fancy sheets?
They will book you in five star hotels (and they will charge you accordingly).

Would you rather spend less on accommodation so that there is more in the budget for meals and activities?
There is no trial, no flea trap motels, here. Of course, you can also do it on your own, but since you are paying for the service, allow them to reserve their rooms and buy their tickets to the museum while doing the important work of investigating restaurants and buying souvenirs.
